Chaitén!

We got up early and we drove into town. At 9 we were at the dock to see if there was a boat for us to take. The next one didn't come til 11. And we were put on the wait list for that. So we waited for 3 hours in the car. Fernanda, Rafael, and I talked and slept.

The boat came at 12 and luckily there was a spot. And then we took a short boat ride, then took a 4 hour one! It was pretty chilly, foggy, and rainy. So we didn't go outside too much. We ate sandwiches and drank tea in this sitting area. And we took a few pictures outside.

 Fernanda, Rafael, and I.

 Cars on a boat...

 Viva Chileeee!
 Fernanda and I:
 And Roberto too:
When we got to the dock, we drove 20 minutes to take yet another boat. A short one. And THEN. We got to the island where the town was located. And we had to drove 2 hours on these super bumpy roads to get there.

There may have even been more potholes than the roads in Ironwood!
 Roberto and I:
Everything was sooo green. Also I think this picture accurately describes how tired and a mess I was from such a long day of traveling.
 Maricel and I:
But we finally finally arrived at our final destination! Chaitén!

Ok. So in 2008, the volcano in Chaitén erupted. And the town was evacuated. And the government bought a ton of houses so the owners wouldn't go back. But there were still a lot of people that went back to their home town. There is still a TON of wreckage and abandoned houses are everywhere. Parts of it are pretty desolate. So that's the deal.

When we got in, we got started in on the dreaded cabana hunting. We took a break and ate some good pork chops. And then we got back and finally found a cabana 20 minutes from town. Super expensive but a nice warm cabin. I went to take a shower and the water was ice cold. And so we called the owners over. And after half an hour it was working. So I took a nice warm shower. An hour later, the owners came over and said that no one else could take a shower that night. Whoops. And then the cable went out. I'm a lucky girl.

After a nice breakfast in the morning, we left and drove back into Chaitén. We found a cheaper cabana, dropped our stuff, and went to take a trip to the hot springs.

After some super pretty mountains: They look mystic with the fog. :)
 More driving:

This sinking boat:
This bridge:

So after all that, we got to the hot springs and the guy asked us to come back later since they were super full. So... we left.

On the way back, we stopped at a park:

Green green green.
 Maricel and I:
 I love this view:
And I really like this one. :)

When we got back to the cabaña, Maricel made some really good spaghetti with a hamburger patty and an egg on top. That's typical camping food. Carb up!

We relaxed a bit and then set out to explore the town. We walked around the for 2 hours or so looking at the wreckage from the volcano eruption.

The plaza:

And now for a whole bunchy bunch of pictures of the wreckage:

Pretty crazy stuff, huh?

After we explored, we went "home" and Fernanda and Rafael wanted to watch a scary movie. I'm so terrible with scary movies. Just ask Katie. hahaha. And we picked The Conjuring. It was soooo scary. We went to bed at 1, so that was fun falling asleep in the dark!

Alrighhhtty folks. Next post coming up is about hiking to see a volcano! Stay tuned!

  1. You’re right. Those roads do look like Ironwood’s in teh spring time!
You are very excited to see a moss-covered tree. Of course you are....
Chaiten’s volcano is very interesting. I googled it and looked at it and photos of when it happened. A very sad thing for a town. I’m surprised that after six years, there is stil so much ash around, and that the houses haven’t been cleared out.
I like your sinking boat picture.
    and your fog covered mountains.
Why was there a big green grassy field. Were there cows or horses there?
I also like that your barbed wire is in focus, and the rest is out of focus. “Out of focus” is an artsy way of saying “blurry”.
Yikes. You watched The Conjuring? Vitoria would be proud of you. And Maria would be scared for you. hahahha.

    1. Well, moss is my favorite member of the Plantae kingdom! ( <--- BYU biology)
I know! There are so many abandoned houses and it'ts pretty deserted in some parts.
Nope. No cows or horses OR sheep there. Just an abandoned field...
I fell fancy when I take artsy pictures. :)
It was soooo scary! Annnd. I forgot to say, but we stopped watching it at one because we had to get up early the next day. We didn't even finish it! Which made it worse! And I really kinda want to see how it ends... and sometimes I think of watching it one night. But then I think of how freaked out I will be by myself..

  2. Those potholes look just like how mill street looked last spring. You sure an Ironwood picture didn't get mixed up with your vacation photos?! lolol :)

Earthquakes, car accidents and now volcanos?! Come home Christy <3

Ending up watching the conjuring 3 times. Don't ask my why. I have to say it is not as scary the 3rd time around.

Love your photos. The fog cover mountains are my favorite. Would love to have that view.

Wow, good pictures. You're so pretty. That trip sounds exhausting. Way to go getting the only shower, though, exchange student. Haha. :)
